MY
PROFESSIONAL
JOURNEY

Or how I discovered my passion for tech and helping others

(You can check out my resume, too, but this is way cooler)

August 2012
Juan moves to the US in search of the American Dream

He scores a job in one of the most exclusive beach golf resorts in Florida.

He works in several nearby fine dining restaurants where he will develop his customer service skills, attention to detail as well as strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.

Juan moves down to Miami in search of culture and new opportunities.

There, he works his way up to a Customer Service Team Leader role with Brio, where he's in charge of daily operations and customer satisfaction.

He supervises the front of the house team, enforcing quality service standards. He fine tunes his mediation and de-escalation skills and creates friendly business relationships with guests that result in improved customer retention. He's also in charge of daily financials.

In his spare time, he gets immersed in the latin culture of the area and starts growing an interest for dancing and how it brings people together.

“This was a wonderful time in my career.
I learned how to manage a team and how to create meaningful, lasting relationships with customers. I was happy, but I knew I could do more than hospitality.”

— Juan, Customer Service Team Leader @ Brio

March 2018
Following his intuition, Juan takes on a customer service management role at Casa Salsa.

During his time in Miami, he sees the potential for growth in the entertainment industry and starts working for the biggest latin dance academy in South Florida.

He puts his leadership experience and people skills to use and works closely with the owner to grow and scale the business.

He is in charge of managing customers accounts, billing, sales, and provides support for hundreds of customers on site, over email, phone and chat.

He also helps manage social media and even assists instructors during class. His favorite part of the job is introducing folks to the world of dance and creating meaningful relationships with them.

As the studio grows, he embraces his love for latin dance, becomes an instructor, and starts shaping his own role in the company. He and his team start performing across Florida, entertaining the crowds.

2 years later his hard work pays off when he gets noticed by a big name in the industry and gets cast in ''Viralo al Reves", latest music video by International Grammy Award Winner Jose Alberto ''El Canario''.

“During this time I discovered that my passion for community and relationships went beyond the world of hospitality. I could have never imagined pivoting my career in this direction would bring so much growth and wonderful memories.”

March 2020
The pandemic hits and leaves Juan's career hanging by a thread.

Both the hospitality and entertainment industries are heavily impacted by the pandemic.

Realizing he has to pivot his career again, this time into a more reliable field, he decides to learn programming.

September 2021
While he learns programming, Juan decides to join the Rhode Island Department of Health

Just 2 months in, he gets promoted to Case Investigator, a role where he'll use his experience to create rapport with patients, provide guidelines, resources, and ultimately help save lives.

He acquires valuable experience with high volume of calls, phone etiquette, remote work, CRM systems, all while collaborating with multiple departments within the Department of Health.

“Towards the end of my time with RIDOH, something clicked. I realized it wasn't so much a specific industry I was after, but the satisfaction of helping others and doing meaningful work. I knew I wanted to take that with me when the time to break into tech came.”

— Juan, Case Investigator @ RIDOH

November 2021
After getting his feet wet with programming, he decides to specialize in web development.

He joins a full-stack web development bootcamp and learns front-end under the mentorship of Leon Noel, Director of Engineering at Resilient Coders, a Boston non-profit that helps folks of color and from marginalized communities find jobs in tech.

Throughout the course of the bootcamp, Juan struggles to keep his attention on the coding. He can't help focusing on the visuals. He did teach himself Photoshop at age 12, and he'd always wanted to get back into it.

In an attempt to feed his curiosity about web design, he goes against his mentor's advice and decides not to use templates. He just can't. He has to know design. How else is he gonna properly serve his future clients?

He is marveled by web design and the wonderful work designers are putting out, and is adamant about learning the trade in order to do great work. He slows down and takes time to learn the fundamentals of design, user interface and user experience.

April 2022
6 months and many hard coded websites later, Juan makes a discovery that will change his life.

As he continues to dedicate time to learning design over the back-end, he starts looking for ways to speed up his process. Hand coding just takes too long. There's gotta be a better way, and he sets out to find it.

That's how he finds

“I started being able to build sites so quickly and efficiently that I finally had free time to focus on learning more design, freelancing, sales, SEO, SOPs... you name it. Plus the learning curve was almost non-existent! I knew then I had to jump into the No-Code space with both feet.”

— Juan, Freelance Web Designer & Developer

July 2022
After getting his feet wet with programming, he decides to specialize in web development.

He relies on his network from the latin dance community and finds his first couple of clients: International actor and model Carla Collado, based in Miami, and internationally published photographer Fuquan Ferrell, based in Atlanta.

“Learning about programming and web development introduced me to the infinite possibilities the tech industry has to offer.
It also made me realize working WITH people will be needed more than ever as we enter the AI revolution. I believe there is room for someone with my skillset in this emerging market.”

🎉 BIG NEWS
Juan starts collaborating with Finsweet, the largest and most prominent web development agency in the Webflow space.

Still in disbelief over how much his life has been transformed in just 6 months thanks to Webflow and the No-Code community, Juan decides he needs to pay it forward.

He comes up with a plan.

A plan to share his knowledge so that other folks with a passion for tech — especially those who can't afford a higher education — can start creating for the web, too.

He starts having talks with Finsweet's Founder Joe Krug and Head of Community Victoria Perez:

Leveraging his native proficiency in Spanish and English, his technical knowledge as well as his excellent oral and written communication skills, Juan is selected for an official collaboration with Finsweet that aims to translate and make the Client-First V2 documentation available to all Spanish-speaking Webflow users around the world.

And this is just the beginning. Juan has plans to continue creating content that contributes to the democratization of the web.

He wants to release educational content focused on teaching the basics of HTML and CSS in the context of Webflow.

He hopes to be part of the Generation No-Code Series one day.

Stay tuned!
